China's electric vehicle and battery maker, BYD, has registered its corporate name in South Korea in an apparent bid to set up its sales branch, a press report said Tuesday.

The world's largest electric carmaker has established a network of dealerships with South Korean partners this year, as competition grew among domestic and foreign brands to gain a foothold in what would become one of Asia's biggest electric vehicle (EV) markets.

Court data showed BYD's branch in South Korea would be based on the southern resort island of Jeju, a hot place for Chinese vacationers, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Jeju has presented the idea of becoming a clean island using eco-friendly vehicles and renewable energy.
