A 7-year-old girl was looking for her mother. She was getting worried that her mother was nowhere to be seen since Monday but her dad started acting "weird". She started searching her home and in the basement, she found her mom's lifeless body with a "stab on the back" on Tuesday. It didn't take her long to figure out who was responsible. She did not tell anyone at home what she found in the basement.

She went to school like nothing happened on Wednesday. She went to meet her school counselor and told the counselor what she saw in her basement. According to the report, the girl said when she saw "lots of blood" and a body that has her mother's sweater on in the basement, she did not tell anyone because she "didn't want to be next".

As she was leaving the basement, she got a call from her mother's boyfriend who said he was coming over. She told her father, Benjamin Byers and he started acting "suspicious" all of sudden. The 45-year-old closed all the blinds and locked the front door.

She just kept it quiet until she was safely away from her father. The school counselor notified the local authorities immediately.

Police found lifeless Melissa Byers's body in the basement as the girl said. Investigators also obtained evidence of blood from carpet, plastic sheets, and clothing. There were also signs of cleaning up blood from the dining room, living room, kitchen, and bathroom.

Byers was charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, abandonment of a corpse and child endangerment on Thursday. He is being held on $500,000 bond.
