SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Aju News) -- Police blamed negligence by nurses and doctors for causing a bacterial infection that killed four newborn babies in incubators last month at a college hospital in Seoul.
A health scare erupted in December last year when four babies died one by one in their incubators at the intensive care unit of a college hospital in western Seoul. Police sent forensic experts because the hospital was unable to find the exact cause of the sudden deaths during CPR treatment.
Health officials have been on close watch because the case sparked concerns about a contagious virus.
On Friday, the National Forensic Service released the outcome of autopsies, saying a bacteria called Citrobacter Freundii had caused septicemia. Police suspect the babies were infected with the bacteria through vial, a glass or plastic bottle used to store medication as liquids, powders or capsules.
Police said three nurses and two doctors on duty would be investigated and charged with negligence.
