SEOUL -- Hyundai Rotem, a South Korean train and armored vehicle maker, won a 542 billion won (486 million) order from Taiwan's northwestern city of Taoyuan to provide a light urban railroad system and 80 unmanned cars.

Hyundai Rotem, affiliated with the Hyundai Motor Group, said in a regulatory filing Tuesday that it won the order in a consortium with Siemens Aktiengesellschaft of Germany and BES Engineering of Taiwan.

The South Korean company will be in charge of cars and the electrical and mechanical (E&M) light railroad system for the Taoyuan Green railway Unmanned Light Railway, scheduled to open in 2025.

A light railroad system operates rolling stocks which are smaller than those of ordinary subways. Because of the unique character of the urban railroad system, sometimes light railroad systems operate cars on the streets. They are popular in densely populated cities in the United States and Britain.

Earlier this month, Hyundai Rotem regained an entry into Taiwanese market dominated by European and Japanese companies for the first time in 19 years by winning an $851 million order from the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) to provide 520 cars. The administration has been reforming its old railroad infrastructure with an investment of 35 trillion won until 2026. Hyundai Rotem will provide cars by 2024.
