SEOUL -- A consortium of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and POSCO Engineering & Construction secured a deal worth 3.5 trillion won ($3.09 billion) to build a set of South Korea's biggest eco-friendly thermal power plants in the eastern port city of Samcheok.

The two companies said Wednesday they have signed a contract with POSPower, a unit of South Korea's Posco steel group, to build a 1,050MW plant by October 2023 and the second one by April 2024.

Doosan Heavy, a major builder of power plants, turbines and generators, controls 51 percent of the consortium, and POSCO E&C owns 49 percent. They promised to build the world's best eco-friendly thermal power plant by using an ultra-supercritical steam (USC) solution for high efficiency and low emissions.

"We will build the world's best environment-friendly thermal power plant," Doosan Heavy vice president Yoon Seok-won said, adding that his company would actively push for overseas orders.

Coal-fired USC power plants prioritize operational efficiency and emissions reduction as the extreme boiler temperature and pressure heat the water so that it becomes a "supercritical" fluid that exhibits properties of liquid and gas phases. In this state, the supercritical steam is much more efficient at driving turbines.
