Samsung starts production of 7-nanometer chip for next-generation smart devices

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics has started the commercial production of 7LPP, a "revolutionary" ultra-thin, high-performance microchip that can power devices featuring next-generation technologies such as fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication, artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous driving.

Samsung said in a statement uploaded onto its news blog Thursday that it has finished all process technology development of the seven-nanometer (nm) LPP (Low Power Plus) EUV (extreme ultraviolet) chip manufacturing process. Qualcomm, a global wireless technology company, will use Samsung's 7nm chip making process to create 5G processors for next-generation devices.

Samsung said that with the commercialization of 7LPP, customers can build "a full range of exciting new products that will push the boundaries of applications such as 5G, artificial intelligence, enterprise and hyper-scale datacenter, IoT, automotive and networking."

"With the introduction of its EUV process node, Samsung has led a quiet revolution in the semiconductor industry," Charlie Bae, executive vice president of Samsung's foundry sales and marketing team, said. 

The EUV process, also known as the EUV lithography process, is a technology using extreme ultraviolet light wavelengths to expose an ultra-thin electrical circuit. Samsung introduced the 7nm LPP EUV process technology in May last year.

Samsung said its 7nm chip is about 20 percent higher in performance than the company's 10nm chip and can save up to 40 percent of space. It is more power efficient and ideal for next-generation devices.
