SEOUL -- South Korea will dispatch a military transport plane to bring back hundreds of tourists stranded on the resort island of Saipan battered by a super typhoon.

Typhoon Yutu with maximum winds of at least 210 kilometers per hour struck the island in the Western Pacific Thursday, devastating its airport, homes and other important facilities such as hospitals and power grids. About 1,800 South Korean tourists remained stranded.

The foreign ministry said Friday that a military transport plane would carry South Korean tourists from Saipan to Guam while a rapid response team will supply food, medicine and water.
