SEOUL -- A light emitting diode (LED) lifeline which shines brightly even in dark, murky waters was showcased Tuesday at a scientific investigation forum at the southern city of Yangsan.
Lifelines, which are vital equipment for divers in rescue operations, limit movement. Divers have to hold on to the lifelines all the time because it's hard to find them again in waters with low visibility.
A new lifeline using fiber optics and high-performance LED was developed by the police agency in Busan and the Korea Maritime and Ocean University. It emits strong light, providing the visibility of more than 10 meters (32 feet) in the 50-meter depth of water. Developers are carrying out a field test for the commercialization of an upgraded version.
