SEOUL -- CJ ENM, a top entertainment and mass media company in South Korea, invested $1 million in "Moulin Rouge!", a Broadway musical that would open in June next year, to fulfill the goal of becoming a global producing company.

CJ ENM, the key distributor of K-pop contents, said Monday that it had its name included on the list of producers of the musical. Through its investment, the company earned rights to perform the musical in South Korea and co-produce it in other countries.

"We will be able to improve our musical-producing capabilities targeting the global market," CJENM said in a statement, adding Moulin Rouge! has the potential of becoming a long-term hit as it includes popular aspects such as hit songs and stunning recreations of Paris from the 1890s.

It was CJ ENM's third investment in Broadway musicals after "Kinky Boots" and "The Bodyguard" which gained popularity in South Korea. Moulin Rouge!, a musical play based on the 2001 musical hit film of the same name, premiered at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in July this year.
