SEOUL -- At a trade fair in Las Vegas in January, South Korea's second-largest carmaker, Kia Motors, will showcase a unique artificial intelligence-based vehicle control system that reads the emotions of a driver to provide an optimized driving environment.

Kia, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor, said in a statement Thursday that the adaptive driving system would present a new direction for mobility technology by showcasing "Real-time Emotion Adaptive Driving" (READ), an interactive driving control system that reacts to a driver's emotions in real time.

READ is an artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning-based technology co-developed by Kia and Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Affective Computing Lab. It provides a perfect driving environment by controlling the brightness of cabin lights, car vibration, scent and temperature.

Next year, Hyundai and Kia will adopt an AI voice assistant service from South Korea's web service giant Kakao.
