SEOUL -- Fingerprint and palm vein scanners will be used this week at South Korean airports for the unmanned authentication of passengers using domestic flights. Passengers can go through quick security clearance at designated gates without showing their identification cards if they store biometric data in advance.

The Korea Airports Corp. (KAC) said in a statement Thursday that biometric authentication would be used at 14 airports from Friday. The international airport in Incheon, South Korea's main gateway, has no biometric authentification for security reasons.

In a pilot project from January 29 to December 26, scanners for biometric authentication were introduced on the most crowded domestic air route between Seoul and the southern resort island of Jeju. KAC data showed that during the period, 163,000 passengers have stored their biometric data.

The new system has the effect of strengthening aviation security and preventing human errors, KAC said, adding that it would introduce self-check-in and self-boarding gate services using biometric information in the future to enhance passenger convenience.

For safe and convenient financial transactions, financial regulators have urged credit card firms and financial institutions to introduce new technology for identification. Fingerprint scanners are widely used at banks and state bodies, but mobile payment requires hack-proof solutions to ensure safe and convenient financial transactions.
