SEOUL -- KT, a top telecom company in South Korea, partnered with the parts-making arm of Hyundai Motor to develop connected car technologies and autonomous driving, based on a 5G mobile communication network.

By using KT's 5G network set up at the test center of Hyundai Mobis in Seosan about 90 kilometers (56 miles) southwest of Seoul, the two companies agreed to develop connected car technologies such as real-time updates for a navigation system and cellular vehicle-to-everything technology (C-V2X) this year.

Last month, KT produced the prototype of an advanced vehicle communication terminal, based on C-V2X, which is instrumental in advancing vehicle connectivity for crash-free autonomous driving.

V2X communication is the passing of information from a vehicle to any entity. It incorporates other more specific types of communication to ensure road safety, traffic efficiency and energy savings. C-V2X communicates with a cellular network for cloud-based services like navigation and infotainment and uses a direct link to communicate with other vehicles, smart infrastructure and pedestrians.

Through cooperation with Mobis, KT will develop technologies to deliver traffic information to vehicles. KT is in charge of supporting connection between 5G terminals installed in autonomous vehicles and 5G communication base stations, while Mobis develops technology to extract and send key information to the server.

"We will lead the next era of autonomous driving by working with Hyundai Mobis, which possesses key autonomous driving technology and solutions," KT vice president Park Yoon-young said in a statement.

Along with V2X networks and vehicle communication terminals, South Korea is building an infrastructure for connected car services such as ultra-low-latency communication.

As a key Hyundai Motor unit, Mobis has accelerated the development of sensors, cameras and other parts for autonomous vehicles and infotainment. The company has tested a level 3 automation system. Level 3 provides self-driving features such as lane keeping assistant and highway driving assistant.

At CES 2019 in Las Vegas, Mobis showcased M.VISION, an advanced system for a high level of autonomous driving, using powerful sensors and radars. A modular self-driving kit that can accurately identify 360 degrees around is the core of M.VISION.
