SEOUL -- Naver Labs, the artificial intelligence wing of South Korea's top web portal, partnered with Intel, an American technology company, and KT, a telecom company involved in the establishment of 5G mobile networks, to develop service robots.

Intel's 5G technology, computing and sensors will be used for the development of service robots. "With the commercialization of 5G, new business opportunities will be created, and smart factories and service robots will become application examples," Intel Korea CEO Kwon Myung-sook said in a statement on Thursday.

"As big companies representing each sector come together, we expect to see a result that will draw a mark in the global 5G-based service robot market," Naver Labs head Seok Sang-ok was quoted as saying.

Using KT's 5G communication network, robots will send and receive data with real-time ultra-low latency.

Naver Labs has stepped up the development of autonomous robots, including a librarian robot in 2017. In October last year, the company forged a partnership with Qualcomm Technologies, the U.S. producer of semiconductor chips, to develop new technologies related to robotics and autonomous driving.

The autonomous robot industry has seen a significant technological advance. Self-roaming robots will help humans with chores such as delivering food, guiding tourists and sorting shipments in warehouses.
