SEOUL -- Through an artificial intelligence-based service, South Korea's online shopping giant Naver will help shoppers conveniently access simplified versions of customer reviews. Long and complicated reviews will be simplified to one or two sentences to speed up shopping.

Online reviews play a vital role in South Korea's online shopping industry that stood at about 16 trillion won ($13.9 billion) in 2020. According to a 2017 survey of 1,200 consumers aged between 19 and 49, conducted by market research firm Embrain, about 78.6 percent always checked customer reviews before purchasing a product online.

Naver said that it has released "AI Review Summary," a customer review service based on the company's hyperscale artificial intelligence (AI) language platform "Hyper Clova. Hyperscale AI utilizes massive computing techniques to process big data and cloud computing at lightning speed.

Hyper Clova would analyze, categorize and filter keywords included in online reviews and display simplified and summarized versions. "Sentences will be clustered and created into a single natural-looking sentence," Naver said in a statement on July 30. Hyper Clova offers review summaries for some 4.4 million products listed on Naver's "Furniture & Interior" category. Reviews of other products will be simplified by Hyper Clova in the future.
