SEOUL -- Hanwha Corporation, the producer of precision-guided munitions, navigational systems for guided weapons and lasers, tied up with a domestic company to turn its defense technology into civilian use and supply sophisticated navigation devices for South Korean coastguard vessels.

Navigation devices for military use provide information on the location, posture, and speed of military platforms. They consist of accelerometers, navigation computers, and gyro. Hanwha Corporation and Dong Kang M-Tech would provide navigation devices for 100-ton and 500-ton coastguard vessels. Dong Kang M-Tech manufactures ship propulsion systems and navigation communication equipment.

Hanwha Corporation said the use of navigation devices for military use can be expanded to autonomous vehicles, robots and drones. The company will supply a fiber optic gyro-based navigation device that can control the location, posture, and speed of platforms even when GPS is not working properly. It is resistant to vibration and impact, making it suitable for platforms that require a long-term operation.

"We will continue to increase product competitiveness so that we can enter not only domestic but also overseas markets," Hanwha Corporation's navigation business head Kim Kwang-jin said in a statement.

Hanwha Corporation and Dong Kang M-Tech will work together to localize components of the ship's autopilot system that can maintain a vessel on a predetermined course without the need for human intervention. Dong Kang M-Tech's marine autopilot receives signals from directional sensors such as gyrocompasses and uses them to automatically control the helm for navigation.
